The Wisconsin Women defeated the visiting County Will Morrigans, 29-12, and the Oconomowoc Women, 46-15, on Saturday, September 24.

Hosting the two matches at the Wisconsin Rugby Club Sports Complex in Cottage Grove, Wis., Wisconsin’s hard-fought victory against the Morrigans marks the third Midwest Division II league win of the season. The win retains Wisconsin’s first-place standing in the Midwest’s Western Division Central League.

Wisconsin welcomed Oconomowoc in a second friendly match and saw great play from our new and less experienced players in a match of 10s. Oconomowoc is a younger team formed just two years ago. Following the matches, all three women’s teams joined the Wisconsin Rugby Club men in a social after the guys defeated the Chicago Westside Condors, 45-10.

[Your dedicated webmaster was busy coaching the UW Women so specific details on the games are limited. The Morrigans were noted to be a very physical team to play and play got a bit “thuggish” at times. Oconomowoc brought 10 players so the friendly was only two 20-minute periods. Wisconsin’s new players were “so awesome” and Dana Gordon pleasantly surprised all with her great kicking against Oconomowoc.]

Wisconsin travels to St. Cloud, Minn., this Saturday, October 1 for the final league match of the season against the St. Cloud Sirens. The Sirens are a new team in the league formed from alumni of the St. Cloud collegiate team. Wisconsin needs to win the match to guarantee home-field advantage for the first round of Midwest playoffs on Saturday, October 15. The top Central League team hosts the No. 2 team from the Northern League (likely the Palmer Women), while the top Northern League team hosts the No. 2 from the Central League.

The Playoff winners then travel to Pittsburgh, Penn., on October 29 and 30 to meet the Eastern Division’s top two women’s team in the Midwest Championships. This is the final step towards advancing to the USA Rugby Division II Women’s National Championships November 12-13 in Virginia Beach, Va.

Wisconsin has also opted to cancel the schedule match against Chicago North on October 8 in Chicago. The team will rest in preparation for hopefully hosting the Midwest Playoff match.

Big thanks to Wisconsin’s Emma Zoch for her excellent statistics! Heal up quick Emma!

Wisconsin Clinches 30-29 Victory Against Palmer to Open Season

Front row (L-R): captains Mary Hanks and Meaghan White; 2nd Row (L-R): Jessica Burda, Amanda Evenstone, Elisa Becker (Woman of the Match), Michelle "Mike" Blaser (Bear Mauler of the Match), Jenny Pederson (Birthday Girl), Sarah Whaley, Mollie Overby; 3rd Row (L-R): Shoshana Griffith, Brittany Martin, Meg Dickoff, Terry Russell, Sammy Clevenger, Justine Stewart, Jane Sachs, Nadia Riese and Rebecca Stillman.

The Wisconsin Women kicked off their Fall 2011 Division 2 league season with a come-from-behind victory against the Palmer Women, 30-29.

Traveling south to Davenport, Iowa, Wisconsin brought a small roster to take on the Palmer Women on Saturday, September 10.

The opposing team was comprised of students from Palmer Chiropractic College and is a sister team to the Palmer Men, a Division I powerhouse. Palmer Women recently started offering scholarships to their players, a rare opportunity for senior women’s rugby athletes.

Palmer opened up scoring on the kickoff with a strong run by their inside center to wake up the Wisconsin Women. The women in red opted to take points a few minutes later with a penalty kick by new Wisconsin player Elisa Becker (a Madison, Wis., native and Cornell Women’s Rugby grad).

Team captains Meaghan White and Mary Hanks each scored a try to keep their team in the match. Scoring continued to roll back and forth throughout the match, but Wisconsin found themselves entering the second half down on the scoreboard and tapping into their few remaining reserve players after a key shoulder injury in the first half to outside center Nicole Helmer.

Palmer held a two-try lead with 25 minutes left in the half and kept up a scrambling attack in their backline with nice continuity and deep kicks. But Palmer’s forwards and overall team rucking soon lost steam as Wisconsin finally shook off the rust of a long summer away from 15s rugby.

Fresh from the UW-Madison Women’s Rugby team, new Wisconsin Scrumhalf Rebecca Stillman tapped down a much-needed Wisconsin try after five back-to-back crashing attacks by the visiting team in Palmer’s five-meter zone. An all-team effort, Stillman’s try provided the spark Wisconsin needed to rally back into the match.

Wisconsin’s attack pressed with great continuity across the field and the red forwards began to pound Palmer’s pack in each ruck, winning the majority of ball. Wisconsin hooker Michelle “Mike” Blaser also stole a number of Palmer scrums in addition to some Palmer lineouts as Wisconsin’s jumper. Growing up in nearby DeWitt, Iowa, Blaser’s family was welcomed into Wisconsin’s small fan contingent on the road.

Palmer’s defense started to falter as the minutes ticked down and allowed two more Wisconsin tries by Jessica Burda and new lock Justine Stewart (Brown University) respectively to clinch the 30-29 victory. The final Wisconsin try was Justine Stewart’s first-ever try and she pleasantly surprised all of her new Wisconsin teammates by running in a perfectly-centered score blazing through the Palmer defense.

Wisconsin was also extremely proud of its other new players – flanker Sarah Whaley (UW-Madison), wing Brittany Martin (University of Montana), lock Sammy Clevenger (UW-Stevens Point) and super water runner Mollie Overby on injured reserve. The team also welcomed back teammate Jane Sachs who recently returned from Philadelphia, PA and the Philly Women’s Rugby team.

For their outstanding efforts on the field, Elisa Becker earned Wisconsin’s much-coveted Wonder Woman silk robe as Woman of the Match and Michelle “Mike” Blaser earned the new Bear Mauler trophy (a bear statue found recently in Coach Kyle’s grandma’s basement).

Wisconsin returns home this Saturday, September 17 to play their in-state rivals the Milwaukee Scylla (and by rivals, we mean good rugby buddies!). Kickoff is at 1 p.m. at the Crossroads Rugby Field on Madison’s east side.

The Wisconsin Women brought a full squad to Milwaukee’s Lakefront 7s Rugby Tournament, Saturday, July 9, to finish second overall in the Competitive Women’s bracket.

Wrapping up the day overall with four wins and one loss, Wisconsin was pleased with the day’s rugby and the veteran roster welcomed new teammates Kayla Soliday, Shoshana Griffith and Rebecca Stillman to the WWRFC.

In pool play, Wisconsin opened the day with a tight 10-5 victory over Chicago North Shore (D1). They swept the rest of their pool with a crushing five-try shutout against the Rockford Ravens and a three-try shutout versus a mixed Chicago Women’s side. With 10 tries racked up for the day and a 3-0 record, Wisconsin drew the second seed entering semi-finals and easily handled the UW-La Crosse Women with another five-try shutout.

Wisconsin met the Twin Cities Amazons in the final, but were unable to shutdown the Minnesota side’s national-team players. The women in red saw Katie Meyer lead the team in scoring, joined by Soliday, Stillman, Caitlin Keating, Meaghan Odling and other teammates.

Thank you to our coach Kyle Malaney for his leadership and support throughout the match, in addition to the UW-Madison Women and Wisconsin Rugby Club men, and the whole Madison rugby community down at the tournament.

Madison Rugby Women and Friends at Whorefest Rugby Tournament, June 2011

Upholding a long team tradition, several members of the Wisconsin Women’s Rugby Club traveled south of the border to play in Rockford’s annual W-fest Rugby Tournament, Saturday, June 18.

A “luck of the draw” tournament, each player is assigned a random shirt color and then grouped with two other women and seven men to form a co-ed full-contact rugby team. The tournament is double-elimination. The state of Wisconsin was well represented by more than 25 women and men’s players overall which provided a large cheering squad throughout the day.

The day’s final match saw current Wisconsin Women’s captain Mary Hanks’ Red Team playing former Wisconsin captain Kelly Clerkin’s Salmon Team. Salmon took the tournament, but Hanks was named the Tournament’s Most Valuable  for all women’s players.

Wisconsin Women’s players who participated in the tournament were Mary Hanks, Nadia Riese, Laura Hanks, Caitlin Keating-Bitonti, Michelle “Mike” Blaser, Jessica Burda, Jenny Pederson, Kelly Mullen, and Kelly Clerkin. They were joined by friends Greta Slack from UW-Madison, Xane, Bambi from UW-Stout, Ali from the Amazons, and Amy Cullen from Chicago.

Women DI Club Rankings & Standings
By RugbyMag.com Staff
Not much movement among women’s division one rugby, with the exception of Chicago and Chicago North Shore swapping spots. Chicago logged its first-ever win against North Shore last league season and repeated the feat with a tight 16-13 win last weekend. Chicago and Detroit, which defeated Wisconsin 17-5 on the road, will attempt to end each other’s undefeated season this weekend.

In CR1, the second round of play helped distance San Diego from the rest of the pack, beating Nor Cal Triple Threat 44-7. Seattle won its first match of the season 27-10 over San Francisco Fog and will try to make it 2-0 against Tempe this weekend.

NOVA banked its first league win against Orlando 26-3 and nabbed that all-important bonus point thanks to tries from Mo McQueen, Sarah Davis and two from Rebecca Kigin. The top seed in the CR3’s South Conference will be decided this weekend, as NOVA and Atlanta duke it out. The #3 seeded team had topped Orlando 46-0.

Wisconsin Falls to Detroit, 17-5

Wisconsin Women's RugbyExpecting a dirty, physical match like seasons past, the Wisconsin Women dropped a 17-5 heartbreaker to the visiting Detroit Women September 11.

Detroit (aka The Cobras) surprised Wisconsin with a clean match, fair and well-played by both sides. Despite several charges near the try line, Wisconsin failed to capitalize on their speed and athleticism. Detroit’s quick rucking controlled possession of the ball and created three tries for the visiting team with one successful points-after kick.

Wisconsin’s lone try was scored by wing Katie Meyer (Dubuque, IA).

Down in Chicago, the Midwest’s other Division I teams battled each other in a city rivalry. The Chicago Women were down 13-0 to Chicago North Shore, but surprised their rivals with a rally back to win 16-13.

Detroit Women's RugbyAfter one game a piece for all D-1 teams, Chicago now sits at the top of the Midwest standings. Full conference results can be found here.

Next up for Wisconsin, they welcome Chicago North Shore to Madison on Saturday, Sept. 18 at the Crossroads Rugby Pitch. Kickoff is at 11 a.m.

The women’s match will be followed by a 12:30 match between the Madison Minotaurs and the Wisconsin Rugby Club Old Boys, then a 2 p.m. kickoff between the Wisconsin Rugby Club men and the visiting Eastside Banshees hailing from Minnesota. A social of all teams will be held at the field.

A Wisconsin alum player and globally-noted rugby player, USA Eagle flanker Phaidra Knight recently answered questions from fans on the Women’s Rugby World Cup website. Read Phaidra’s answers here, including mention of how she got started playing for Wisconsin.

Phaidra Knight Answers Your Questions

(IRB.COM) Friday 10 September 2010

Following Australia lock Chris Ross answering the questions you posed on the official Women’s Rugby World Cup Facebook page, here are the answers from USA flanker Phaidra Knight who helped her side beat rivals Canada 23-20 in the fifth place play-off at WRWC 2010.

Julainne Cochrane: How did you get into rugby and what made you stick at it?

Phaidra Knight: I initially got started with rugby at law school, first year of law school. I missed team sports because I played team sports in high school and college and wanted to get reacquainted with it, so I went out to a rugby trial and fell in love with it. I started playing in Wisconsin, so yes it was very cold at times and wet and snowy, but it was having good people around me that kept me doing it. But once I had a taste of it, I was hooked.
